日本語の特徴に、オノマトペ（擬音語・擬態語）の豊富さが挙げられます。特に「ふらふら」「ジタバタ」「もそもそ」等、動作や様子を表す擬態語が極めて多いと言われます（朝鮮語はさらに多いとか…）。
　勿論、英語にもオノマトペはあり、たとえば「チューチュートレイン」（「チューチュー」とは蒸気機関車の擬音。日本語で言うところの「シュッシュッ」に相当。）などがそうですが、日本語の比ではないようです。小泉八雲が日本の怪談を英語に翻訳する際に、どうしてもオノマトペを翻訳することができず、結局、そのまま音をローマ字表記したという逸話もあります。確かに「ひゅーどろどろ」なんてのは英訳不能ですよね。
　さて、斎藤和英にも豊かな日本語のオノマトペがたっぷり収録されています。以下、面白そうなものを幾つか拾ってみました。斎藤対訳の妙をご堪能ください。

ウツラウツラ〈副〉Drowsily:(=する) to drowse; to doze
◆一晩ウツラウツラして明かした　I passed the whole night between waking and sleeping.

ガタピシ〈擬音詞〉
◆ガタピシいわして歩く　to walk on loose planks
◆ガタピシ持ち歩く　to bang about anything
◆戸障子があけたてにガタピシ言う　Sliding-doors hitch in opening or shutting.

クラクラ〈副〉
◆目がクラクラする　I feel dizzy―feel giddy.
◆クラクラ煮え立つ　to boil up―seethe

ザクザク〈擬音詞〉(An onomatopoeia for) crumbling, jingling, etc.
◆歩くと霜柱がザクザク崩れる　The frost crumbles beneath your feet.
◆袂にザクザクと銭を入れている　His pocket is full of jingling coins.

シトシト〈形〉Damp; moist
◆着物が露でシトシトになった　My clothes are moist with dew.
〈副〉Softly; gently; in earnest
◆雨がシトシト降っている　It is raining in earnest.

しょぼしょぼ〈副〉
◆しょぼしょぼ降る雨　a drizzling rain
◆雨はしょぼしょぼ　It drizzles.

スタコラ〈副〉In a hurry; hurry-scurry; helter-skelter
◆と聞いて彼はスタコラ出て行った　On hearing the news, he went out in a hurry.
◆雨が降ってきたので皆スタコラ駆け出した　It began to rain, and everybody broke into a run.
◆巡査を見て皆スタコラ逃げ出した　Seeing the officer, they scampered away―scuttled away―scurried away.

すってんと〔スッテンと〕〈副〉With a thump
◆スッテンと転ぶ　Over one goes.

チラホラ〈副〉Here and there; by twos and threes
◆梅がチラホラ咲き始めた　The plum-blossoms are opening by twos and threes―peeping out here and there.
◆聴衆の中には婦人がチラホラ見えた　The audience was sprinkled with fair faces―There was a sprinkling of fair faces among the audience.

チョロチョロ〈副〉
◆血がチョロチョロ流れる　Blood trickles.
◆小魚が水の中でチョロチョロする　Fishes dart in the water.

トボトボ〈副〉In a hobbling manner

ぴりりと〔ピリリと〕〈副〉Bitingly

ポッキリ〈擬音詞〉(The sound of) snapping

ほろりと〔ホロリと〕〈名〉In a drop
◆ホロリと涙　to drop a tear―A tear stands in one's eye.

ポンポン〈擬音詞〉1. Pom! pom!

◆子どもがヨチヨチ歩く　A child toddles about―toddles along.

　こうしてオノマトペの対訳をつらつら眺めてみると、改めて日本語の、世界に類を見ない表現力の豊かさ・自由度を感じます。その分、「翻訳」という仕事には高度な技術（言語感覚）を要すると言えるでしょう。しかしながら、昨今のボーダーレスの情報社会において、無頓着な英語のカタカナ表記が氾濫し、この愛すべき日本語の多様性がやや失われてきたような気がしてなりません。残念ですね。
